What is ExCeS?

ExCeS is a free service, operated by Radford University's Business Assistance Center (BAC) and sponsored by the Virginia Environmental Endowment.

What is a materials exchange?
Materials that one business discards can be raw material for another. Materials exchanges provide the business community with a clearinghouse for buying, selling or trading by-products, surplus materials and other types of reusable materials.

Why is it beneficial?

By participating in materials exchange you can save money in landfill tipping fees by diverting your excess materials to another business, and/or by purchasing another business’s excess materials at a reduced price. In addition, you will be promoting environmental sustainability by reducing the amount of solid waste taken to the landfill and by preserving natural resources.

How can I participate in ExCeS?

If you have surplus materials that may be of use to another company (Materials Available), or if you need raw materials for your own operations (Materials Wanted), please post this information on the exchange. Posting is easy! You may use the online form, Click this icon to sign up.or simply fill out and return by fax or mail the attached listing form (ExCeS.pdf). Your listing will be reviewed by our staff and then posted to ExCeS and, if you so choose, to a national database, the Recycler's Exchange. Posting on the national exchange will increase the likelihood that you will find a match for the material you want - or want to get rid of.
In addition you may search or browse the listings to find materials that your organization needs. Click here for the search/browse listings page.

What to list

The listing possibilities are endless. You may list anything that your company disposes of or no longer needs that may be of use to another organization. Some examples of materials exchanged include:

• Wood waste, including pallets, clean barrels, scrap lumber, plywood, wood chips and sawdust.
• Product overruns, overstock, and discontinued items
• Manufacturing scrap, seconds, and damaged goods
• Used equipment and machinery
• Excess or obsolete office supplies and equipment
• Excess raw material inventory
• Other reusable items, like stretch/shrink wrap, packing peanuts, textile scraps, etc.

Making an exchange
Interested parties will negotiate their own prices and arrangements for exchanging materials. For example, parties may agree that material is free for the cost of hauling or that the material is available for a fee.

Reporting exchanges
When you have made a successful exchange, please notify the Radford University Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP) at envirobiz@radford.edu. Private and public sponsors provide the funding that keeps the ExCeS operating at no charge to you. To justify continued sponsorship of this service, it is essential that we report as many successful transactions as possible. We appreciate your assistance in collecting this data.
